Stop & Search Complaints

The MPS is proud to deliver quality policing. For us there is no greater priority. We understand that if we are going to learn from experience and find ways to be even better, we need to listen and respond to the needs and views of Londoners. Your views are therefore very important to us.

If you are pleased with the service you have received from us we would like to hear from you. If you are unhappy about the service that you’ve had, you can make a complaint. Both positive and negative feedback will help us improve.

Generally, there are two types of complaint: complaints about our staff and complaints about our policies and procedures.

Complaints about staff

Where a police officer or other member of MPS staff has failed to meet the standards you expect from an MPS employee, you can complain about their conduct, for example, if you think they have been rude or abused their authority. This type of complaint is what is normally understood as ‘a complaint against police’ and is covered by specific legislation and overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, (IPCC).

Complaints about policy and procedure

These are complaints about the way that we do things, for example, our policies and procedures for investigating crime or our tactics for policing demonstrations.

There is a form on the Metropolitan Police Service website that can be used for making a complaint about Police staff.

You can make a complaint by completing the on-line form on the MPS website although you will need to add your personal details as the MPS cannot accept anonymous complaints.

If you are making a complaint you will need to provide full contact details otherwise we will not be able to process your complaint.

In an emergency you should always dial 999. People with hearing difficulties should dial 18000 in an emergency.
